20 Questions

So those wild and crazy ladies over at PAIL (the Pregnant and/or Parenting through Adoption/Infertility/Loss blog/support group I’m part of for anyone not in the know) are doing another “get to know each other” activity.  Last time it was sharing vlogs, this time it’s answering 20 questions.

Here goes!

What was the last thing you threw in the garbage/recycling?

Um.  Gross. I just checked and it was a pair of LP’s, ahem, used underwear that even after washing were still crusty and nasty.  Oh and a diaper.

What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?

Hmm… I don’t think I’ve used my iPod in years!  I use my iPhone to listen to podcasts- so today it was the latest Manic Mommies podcast while I was at the gym.  In the car we listen to either the country music station or one of LP’s CDs- today’s choice was a Disney mix including songs from the Lion King and Toy Story.  I really must start playing more (and better!) music around the house!

What is your favorite quote?

I’m going with 2:

“I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls”- Audrey Hepburn,

and

“Folks, I'm telling you,
birthing is hard
and dying is mean-
so get yourself
a little loving
in between.”

- Langston Hughes

What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

Cleaning the toilet.  Specifically I hate cleaning the outside of it.  I know the inside is grosser but I can never get all the little hairs and dirt and stuff off the nooks and crannies on the outside of the toilet.  Yuck.

What is your favorite form of exercise?

I guess walking.  Although I enjoy kickboxing too- especially if I’m angry about something!

What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?

Sunday afternoons in the autumn- we usually don’t have too much planned and can just hang out as a family…

What is on your bedside table?

A reading light, socks in case my feet get cold, chapstick (several versions), baby monitor.

What is your favorite body part?

Is it bad that I can’t think of anything off the top of my head?  I guess on myself it’s my smile.   Or my hands and wrists.

Would you use the power of invisibility for good or evil? Elaborate.

I’d probably start off using it for good but then would just use it to listen in on people’s conversations.

If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?

Right now, 35, is pretty good.  Although the year I spent in England when I was 20-21 was pretty awesome too.  Not sure I’d last long being that age forever though- so much drama!

What is the first thing you would do if you won the lottery?

Pay off our mortgage, put money away for the kids’ education.  Then move to Tahoe.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

My husband makes this noise with his throat to “scratch it.”  Drives me BONKERS, especially when he does it in his sleep.  I really hope our children did not inherit this habit.

If you could know the answer to any question, what would it be?

What is the meaning of life?  Or how can I make millions of dollars by staying at home and hardly doing any work?

At what age did you become an adult?

5 years ago I would have said 21 when I moved to Boston and got a temp job and was “on my own.”  Now I’d say November 17, 2008- when LP was born and I was suddenly responsible for someone else’s life.

Recommend a book, movie, or television show in three sentences or less.

Parenthood- the stories and acting are amazing, it makes me cry every week, and you will not regret watching it…

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

I was actually a pretty well-behaved kid- hardly ever got in trouble at school. I had some pretty bratty years as a pre-teen and teen though and was pretty nasty to my mom at times.  Sorry Mom!  I think she’s forgiven me.

What was the first album you bought with your own money?

Pretty sure it was the first New Kids on the Block album- on a cassette.  Used to blast it on my pink boombox.

If someone wrote a book about you, what would be the title?

“A Lazy Mom’s Guide to Housekeeping: Get it Done Fast, Get it Done Easy, Get it Done Good Enough”

What story do you wish your family would stop telling about you?

The one about a college boyfriend and me listening to “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from the soundtrack to Armageddon on repeat before I left for my junior year abroad.

True or false: The unicorn is the greatest mythical creature. State your case.

False.  My vote goes to the Pegasus because they can fly.

  3. Woooo! Hoooo! Wild and crazy!

"...Get It Done Good Enough" LOVE THIS. A good philosophy for me to have these days!

The outside of the toilet is definitely grosser than the inside. That's just science.

What Winter Looks Like...

(Welcome to anyone arriving here from Blue Zebra Photography !) (Oh!  And this is post # 500 on Ye Olde Blogge.  Wow!) I mentioned earlier that I'm participating in two different photography projects this year with other members of the Bloom Forum .   The second project I'm participating in are monthly photos that relate to a certain theme or word. For January, the theme is "Winter." We've had an odd winter so far here in Massachusetts.  Hardly any snow at all and over the weekend it was actually in the 50's which is pretty unusual.  We did have a brief snowstorm last week though and while LP and Eliza were cozied up on the couch together I wandered around and took a few photos of the scene.  I love how cozy it is in our house when it's snowy out and wanted to capture some images that conveyed that... February: What Shadow Looks Like

(Welcome if you’re coming from Suzanne O'Brien Studio in Northern California!) This month’s group photography theme was “shadow.”  I’ll admit, I had a bit of a hard time with this one.  We’re in the middle of the February doldrums around these parts, and while the sun does shine from time to time it’s cold and blustery and damp most days.  It was tough to get motivated and creative about this, but that’s the whole point of the challenge! The kids and I were in the living room one afternoon and LP was lining his toys up on the windowsill.  The (frigid) afternoon sun was pouring in and I realized that there was a sort of lightbox effect.   I enlisted LP’s help in photographing some of his favorite toys (and one of Eliza’s) so he was the “stylist” for this little photo shoot.  I think if we ever have a dedicated play room I might frame some of these photos for the walls! March: What Home Looks Like

(Welcome if you've arrived here from Laurie Schultz's blog !)  Over the years the definition of Home for me has changed.  Growing up it was, of course, the house I lived in with my parents and my brothers.   Even after college when I moved to another state “home” was still back in that house.   Although my apartments were homey and some of my roommates became like family to me, Home was always back in my hometown in the house I grew up in. Even after moving in with Paul, getting married, and buying our own house, a small part of me still felt like home was back in Pennsylvania.  We were creating our own newlywed version of home but I always referred to going to my parents’ house as “going home.”  This has changed since having children though.  Now home is here- where my heart is, figuratively and literally.  It’s wonderful and exhausting and messy and crazy- usually all at once.  And I wouldn't change any of it.  Now, home is where my hubby takes care of thin
