Hiccups, Round Ligaments, and Childbirth Class #3

So Wednesday was a busy day baby-wise. I had a regular doctor's appointment. Am still on track weight-wise, etc. and Little Guy's heartbeat sounded great. He had the hiccups while we were listening to him which was pretty funny and super cute! I go back in two weeks and then I think I start going every week after that point...

Also found out that the stabbing pain in my lower right abdomen every time I stand up and/or move is round ligament pain which is what I suspected. One of the wonderful side effects of pregnancy... And another one of those side effects that you really can't do anything about... Oh well, at least it's not hemorrhoids (knock on wood!)

We had our third childbirth class on Wednesday night. We went over the stages of labor in more detail and then talked about the various options for controlling pain during labor. I've never in my life even CONSIDERED going all natural but I have to say that the epidural section totally freaked me out. I am NOT good with needles, in fact, when the instructor said that the first thing they'd do at the hospital is put in an IV THAT freaked me out, and that's not a giant needle going into your spine!

I think that the parts that scare me most about the epidural are that the instructor said that the doctor might ask our "support person" (she uses that term as half the class is there with boyfriends or their mother) to leave the room while they do the procedure. And then they hook you up to all sorts of monitors and you're stuck in bed from that point on. Something about not being physically ABLE to get up out of bed scares me... I'm sure I'll end up going for the epidural but it's the part of childbirth that I'm MOST scared of...

We also did some practicing of various breathing techniques and positions to use during the first part of labor when we're still at home. One involved Paul standing in front of me with my arms on his shoulders, much like a slow dance. Since the dogs always go crazy if we even hug each other we decided that it might not be the best technique for us. We can just imagine Socks starting to bark and jumping on us while Gabby whines at our feet... That will be relaxing!

So this weekend we're celebrating our second anniversary (which is technically on Tuesday)... We have some exciting events planned, including the purchase of a breast pump and looking at new carpeting for our living room... I know, what a thrilling way to celebrate! The carpet I AM excited about as the previous owners had a large dog and cats and the carpet is at least 15 years old and totally grosses me out. There's no way I'd let our baby crawl around on it so we're hoping to replace it soon... Also hoping to get to a local farm for some pumpkins and apple cider- that might be a little more romantic than breast pumps and carpeting!

What Winter Looks Like...

(Welcome to anyone arriving here from Blue Zebra Photography !) (Oh!  And this is post # 500 on Ye Olde Blogge.  Wow!) I mentioned earlier that I'm participating in two different photography projects this year with other members of the Bloom Forum .   The second project I'm participating in are monthly photos that relate to a certain theme or word. For January, the theme is "Winter." We've had an odd winter so far here in Massachusetts.  Hardly any snow at all and over the weekend it was actually in the 50's which is pretty unusual.  We did have a brief snowstorm last week though and while LP and Eliza were cozied up on the couch together I wandered around and took a few photos of the scene.  I love how cozy it is in our house when it's snowy out and wanted to capture some images that conveyed that... February: What Shadow Looks Like

(Welcome if you’re coming from Suzanne O'Brien Studio in Northern California!) This month’s group photography theme was “shadow.”  I’ll admit, I had a bit of a hard time with this one.  We’re in the middle of the February doldrums around these parts, and while the sun does shine from time to time it’s cold and blustery and damp most days.  It was tough to get motivated and creative about this, but that’s the whole point of the challenge! The kids and I were in the living room one afternoon and LP was lining his toys up on the windowsill.  The (frigid) afternoon sun was pouring in and I realized that there was a sort of lightbox effect.   I enlisted LP’s help in photographing some of his favorite toys (and one of Eliza’s) so he was the “stylist” for this little photo shoot.  I think if we ever have a dedicated play room I might frame some of these photos for the walls! March: What Home Looks Like

(Welcome if you've arrived here from Laurie Schultz's blog !)  Over the years the definition of Home for me has changed.  Growing up it was, of course, the house I lived in with my parents and my brothers.   Even after college when I moved to another state “home” was still back in that house.   Although my apartments were homey and some of my roommates became like family to me, Home was always back in my hometown in the house I grew up in. Even after moving in with Paul, getting married, and buying our own house, a small part of me still felt like home was back in Pennsylvania.  We were creating our own newlywed version of home but I always referred to going to my parents’ house as “going home.”  This has changed since having children though.  Now home is here- where my heart is, figuratively and literally.  It’s wonderful and exhausting and messy and crazy- usually all at once.  And I wouldn't change any of it.  Now, home is where my hubby takes care of thin
