Surprise Bathroom Makeover!

While Paul was away I decided to surprise him with a bathroom makeover (cause men ALWAYS notice and love that kind of thing!).... In actuality I was taking a shower and noticing how grimy our full bath looked (even though I knew it was clean)...

So you can get a good idea, here's how the bathroom looked when we first looked at the house (we'd only changed the shower curtain since we moved in...)  Please note the LOVEY peachy-pink shower surround, toilet, counter top and floors...

Now eventually the plan is to re-do the bathroom, possibly stealing a little space from the master bedroom to widen the bathroom a bit as it's rather small.  We'd like to put in a skylight (apparently at one point there was a window over the tub which was closed in when the previous owners installed the surround).  And we'd like to install tile floors and  a new vanity...

For now though I just wanted to do something cheap and easy to make it a little more bearable.. So using paint we already had around the house I painted the walls a beige color and the vanity and medicine cabinet went chocolate brown.  I also used a translucent faux finish paint that we had to do a wide stripe around the room (this didn't turn out quite the way I wanted but oh well).. I picked up a new shower curtain and some new hardware and ta-da- brand new bathroom!

Here are some pics:

(just pretend that the cabinet doors are actually installed.. The new hardware I bought needs new screw holes drilled and by the time I got everything else back together I couldn't deal with it any more.. So Paul gets to finish this little project!)

Close-up of the new shower curtain and the "stripe" on the wall.. I'm thinking I should have actually mixed  a little of the wall color with the glaze instead of just painting the glaze on the wall but oh well!

Again, ignore the cabinet doors.. And that funky shadow..

I think it looks a lot better- we'll see if Paul even notices!!

February: What Shadow Looks Like

(Welcome if you’re coming from Suzanne O'Brien Studio in Northern California!) This month’s group photography theme was “shadow.”  I’ll admit, I had a bit of a hard time with this one.  We’re in the middle of the February doldrums around these parts, and while the sun does shine from time to time it’s cold and blustery and damp most days.  It was tough to get motivated and creative about this, but that’s the whole point of the challenge! The kids and I were in the living room one afternoon and LP was lining his toys up on the windowsill.  The (frigid) afternoon sun was pouring in and I realized that there was a sort of lightbox effect.   I enlisted LP’s help in photographing some of his favorite toys (and one of Eliza’s) so he was the “stylist” for this little photo shoot.  I think if we ever have a dedicated play room I might frame some of these photos for the walls! 10 on 10: August

Here's August's 10 on 10!  It was a quiet day at home with just a trip to the playground to shake things up!  Thought I'd try something new by adding captions to each photo- what do you think?  For some reason they look a little blurry to  me- will have to figure that out for next time! Now head on over to Kate Suzanne Photography in Asheville for her 10 on 10!

A Bit of Sewing….

I’ve been on a sewing kick lately- made a few things for Eliza that I thought I’d share (of course, I also have a list about a mile long of things I really need to get working on for Christmas, but bumped them all to make these little, totally not needed but too cute to resist, pieces…). First up is another Geranium Dress from the pattern by Made by Rae .  The pattern is for a sleeveless dress or one with cap sleeves but I really wanted long sleeves so I drafted my own and they worked out perfectly!  The fabric is a super soft baby corduroy.  I made a mistake and sewed the skirt on the wrong way- instead of picking it all apart though I decided to just cover my seam (which should have been on the inside- whoops, distracted!) with a  fabric band.  I used the same fabric for the lining in the bodice. On the patch pockets I stitched Eliza’s name- it says “Eliza” on one pocket and “Rose” on the other.. I wish I’d used the polkadot pattern for the pockets as I thi...
