Nursery Update!

So this is where we started with the nursery this weekend. It was full of stuff that had just landed there when we moved in and hadn't been touched. Plus it was full of some of the stuff for the baby. The windows were filthy, the closet was dirty, and it wasn't terribly impressive.

So we got to work.  Friday night we cleared out the room except for the armchair and a few other things.  Saturday morning we took down the closet doors and started scrubbing.  And painting.  And scrubbing some more.

Here we are in all of our glory.  Lovely.  And another lovely thing is the fact that we have no overhead lighting in any of our bedrooms.  Eventually Paul hopes to install some but for now we're making do with the plug-in and hang lights (at least the outlet is controlled by a light switch by the door!).  So if anyone has suggestions for how to both "baby proof" and "ugly proof" the cord running up the wall from the outlet please let me know!

By 1 pm on Sunday we were mostly done.  We'd painted the trim, the walls, the interior of the closet, and a bookshelf.  We'd set up the crib with the help of Paul and cleaned every inch of the room.

The walls were painted in "faded denim."  The bookshelf and closet are "asparagus."

Here's the crib corner.  This crib was mine when I was a baby- the end with the colored circles on it is plexi-glass.

And here's the closet.  Originally we'd planned to put bi-fold doors on the closet and install an organizer system of some sort.  The changing table was headed for that wall to the left of the closet.  But when we brought it upstairs it fit nicely into the closet nook with room left for some hanging space and a closet organizer.  So we're leaving the doors off for now and instead I'll hang some simple decorative curtains on either side.

As I said there's room for some hanging items.  Right now it's the Yankees onesie and some of my Dad's baby clothes.  Eventually we'll be hanging baby's outfits for the week most likely and the vintage clothes will be hung on the wall in a more decorative fashion.

Here's a floor plan of the nursery (not to scale!).

So the next step is to figure out what I'm putting on the walls and where, and to start sewing!  I'll keep updating as I go!

I really love the way the colors turned out.  The blue isn't too babyish and should be a good color for our little guy for many years to come... And the green adds just the right pop of color and fun to the room.. I can't wait to see it all come together!

What Winter Looks Like...

(Welcome to anyone arriving here from Blue Zebra Photography !) (Oh!  And this is post # 500 on Ye Olde Blogge.  Wow!) I mentioned earlier that I'm participating in two different photography projects this year with other members of the Bloom Forum .   The second project I'm participating in are monthly photos that relate to a certain theme or word. For January, the theme is "Winter." We've had an odd winter so far here in Massachusetts.  Hardly any snow at all and over the weekend it was actually in the 50's which is pretty unusual.  We did have a brief snowstorm last week though and while LP and Eliza were cozied up on the couch together I wandered around and took a few photos of the scene.  I love how cozy it is in our house when it's snowy out and wanted to capture some images that conveyed that... February: What Shadow Looks Like

(Welcome if you’re coming from Suzanne O'Brien Studio in Northern California!) This month’s group photography theme was “shadow.”  I’ll admit, I had a bit of a hard time with this one.  We’re in the middle of the February doldrums around these parts, and while the sun does shine from time to time it’s cold and blustery and damp most days.  It was tough to get motivated and creative about this, but that’s the whole point of the challenge! The kids and I were in the living room one afternoon and LP was lining his toys up on the windowsill.  The (frigid) afternoon sun was pouring in and I realized that there was a sort of lightbox effect.   I enlisted LP’s help in photographing some of his favorite toys (and one of Eliza’s) so he was the “stylist” for this little photo shoot.  I think if we ever have a dedicated play room I might frame some of these photos for the walls! March: What Home Looks Like

(Welcome if you've arrived here from Laurie Schultz's blog !)  Over the years the definition of Home for me has changed.  Growing up it was, of course, the house I lived in with my parents and my brothers.   Even after college when I moved to another state “home” was still back in that house.   Although my apartments were homey and some of my roommates became like family to me, Home was always back in my hometown in the house I grew up in. Even after moving in with Paul, getting married, and buying our own house, a small part of me still felt like home was back in Pennsylvania.  We were creating our own newlywed version of home but I always referred to going to my parents’ house as “going home.”  This has changed since having children though.  Now home is here- where my heart is, figuratively and literally.  It’s wonderful and exhausting and messy and crazy- usually all at once.  And I wouldn't change any of it.  Now, home is where my hubby takes care of thin
